About the Journal
Henry Lunt began his journal in 1852, shortly after arriving in Cedar City and marrying his first wife, Ellen Whittaker. His entries from 1852 and 1853 capture the struggles and triumphs of the early settlement period in southern Utah — including the famous Christmas 1852 observance that is also documented in the Stories section.
The Mission to England entries (1854–1857) record his service as a missionary in the land of his birth. His later short entries from 1858–1859 reflect a more settled life back in Cedar City.
